This is definitely the best thriller I’ve read this year, and I’ve been waiting for this particular one for years. As a fan of the Elvis Cole series, my favorite mystery has always been L.A. Requiem (1999) because Crais develops Joe Pike – the enigmatic and intriguing partner of P.I. Elvis Cole – so well. Usually overshadowed by the wisecracking P.I., Joe Pike is the main character in The Watchman. Even though this novel is a treat for those who have read the series for years, first-time readers will easily be enthralled with this lovable character. (I actually prefer Cole in a supporting role, where his jokes can lighten an otherwise tense moment.)
In this fast-paced thriller, a young heiress has unknowingly become the target of hitmen. When several attempts are made on her life, her multi-millionaire father calls in security professionals, and they call Joe Pike. As an ex-cop, ex-Marine, and ex-mercenary, Pike is the quintessential guardian – a man of few words and capable of swift action.
I can’t wait to read this again. Highly Recommended.
